Kaschmir
Kaschmir
This exquisite item has its graceful and unusual design immeasurably enhanced by its use of the finest natural silk throughout the pile area. The central field area consists of a regular lattice, each compartment containing a miniature prayer arch, within which is detailed with extraordinary precision a series of flowering shrubs or ornamental trees, each a stylisation of the symbolic Tree-of-Life motif. This renowned composition is usually considered to be an idealised rendition of the Garden of Paradise, and belongs to the ancient heritage of the great Persian Court Garden Carpets from the 16th Century Safavid dynasty. Superbly complementing the grace of this focal design is an exceptionally extensive palette of iridescent dye shades, whose lovely pastel tonality contributes substantially to the item's appeal.
