Situated between Isfahan and Kirman in the south of Persia, Yazd has been known since the 16th Century as the origin for beautifully crafted workshop carpets of highly distinctive character, although the output of the town's weavers has always been very small, and examples of the type are consequently both rare and greatly prized by collectors. The richly-ornate floral decoration which is displayed in this exceptional specimen reveals a distinct Kirmani character in its repertoire of ornament, overall stylistic approach and, to an extent, in its colouring. The quality of certain of the dyes - to be seen notably in the blues - is quite unique, however, and together with an originality discernable in many of its ornaments provides one of the identifying features of the origin. Of excellent craftsmanship and materials of the choicest calibre, this is a Yazd formal carpet of impressive accomplishment.
